Jose Mourinho charged by FA for comments after Man United beat Newcastle

Jose Mourinho has been charged by the Football Association for his comments made to television cameras following Manchester United's win over Newcastle on Oct. 6.

United won 3-2 having trailed 2-0, with Alexis Sanchez's injury time winner sparking scenes of jubilation at Old Trafford. Prior to the match, Mourinho was under intense pressure following a report he would lose his job whatever the result against Newcastle.

Mourinho was pictured on camera after the victory as he walked towards the dressing room at full time. It is alleged his comments were "abusive and/or insulting" following the victory.

A Football Association spokesperson said: "Jose Mourinho has been charged following Manchester United's game against Newcastle United.

"It is alleged that his language at the end of the fixture, as captured by the broadcast footage, was abusive and/or insulting and/or improper. He has until 6 p.m. on Oct. 19, 2018 to respond to the charge."

Mourinho could potentially face a touchline ban if he is found guilty. He was banned for one match and fined £58,000 for two separate offences during the 2016-17 season, his first at United.

He was sent to the stands by referee Mark Clattenburg for an incident "in or around the tunnel area during half-time" during a goalless draw with Burnley on Oct. 29. He subsequently served a touchline ban for the 3-1 win at Swansea on Nov. 6 and paid a fine of £8,000.

In a separate incident, he was fined £50,000 for comments made about referee Anthony Taylor. Mourinho said it would be "difficult" for Taylor to officiate United's game at Liverpool on Oct. 17, 2016. The match ended in a goalless draw.

In 2011, Wayne Rooney was suspended for two matches after he was found to have sworn into a television camera during United's 4-2 win over West Ham.

Rooney scored a hat trick at Upton Park but was subsequently banned for two games by the FA, missing a trip to Newcastle as well as an FA Cup semifinal defeat to Manchester City.
